Our position

  • Keep great public schools open. Schools anchor communities. Families need stability to plan years ahead. Closure threats weaken trust and push families away.
  • Closures won’t fix the budget. Other districts have lost students and funding to large-scale closures. Promised efficiencies haven’t fixed their budgets.
  • Make public schools work for everyone. Maintain academic excellence and support every learner. Keep families from every socioeconomic background invested.

Update

01History & community

Seventy years of community. A new chapter.

The first campus, informally called Matthews School, served children in a fast-growing northeast Seattle neighborhood. The school took the John Rogers name in 1954 and moved into a permanent building in 1956. [3]

The school describes a community built around individualized teaching, family events and neighborhood partnerships. Reading and math specialists, art, music and PE sit alongside enrichment and child care through Meadowbrook Community Center. [5]

The replacement opened September 3, 2025. SPS designed its 82,000 square feet for up to 500 K–5 students, with space for future expansion. Solar panels, geothermal wells and outdoor learning areas support a campus designed for net-zero energy. [4]
