Our position

  • Keep great public schools open. Schools anchor communities. Families need stability to plan years ahead. Closure threats weaken trust and push families away.
  • Closures won’t fix the budget. Other districts have lost students and funding to large-scale closures. Promised efficiencies haven’t fixed their budgets.
  • Make public schools work for everyone. Maintain academic excellence and support every learner. Keep families from every socioeconomic background invested.

A school worth knowing

Sand Point
Elementary.

Seattle closed this school. Then Seattle needed it back.

Sand Point opened in 1956 to relieve crowded northeast Seattle schools. SPS closed it in 1988, then reopened it in 2010 as neighboring schools filled and more families needed a school near Magnuson Park. [3]

01History & community

Closed once. Needed again.

Sand Point began in 13 portables beside an apple orchard. A voter-approved construction bond paid for the permanent school, which opened in 1958. [3]

Families fought an earlier closure plan in 1979, pointing to low maintenance costs and the school’s role in voluntary desegregation. SPS eventually closed Sand Point in June 1988 and later leased the building to North Seattle Community College. [3]

The district brought elementary students back in 2010. Its history names families living in transitional housing near Magnuson Park among the reasons to reopen. By 2015, students spoke more than 21 home languages. [3]
